If you review these books and apply their steps, in my opinion, you are going to be significantly more prepared than the average American. From protecting yourself from large medical bills to asset protection with Estate Planning to even managing your finances.

I came across this book out of sheer necessity. More like desperation. My husband had a short trip to the emergency room when we were in Texas. We had a very poor experience and regretted ever visiting the hospital in the first place.

Soon after the trip, I was concerned about how high the bill was going to be as we didn’t have insurance. I would call the billing department throughout the year only to be told that we owed nothing because our $500 deposit covered the bill. 11 months later, a medical bill came in for $13,000. Ouch!

This book gave me EVERYTHING I needed to understand how medical bills work.

Marshall Allen will walk you through how to advocate for yourself and how to negotiate down your medical bill. Following his advice, and a great deal of grace from God, by the end of the negotiating process, our final bill was a little over $3,000. At a 77% price reduction, that’s a great return on investment for a $15 book!

Wills, trusts, general durable power of attorney…estate planning law can all be VERY confusing. If all aspects of estate planning rings similar to a foreign language, then Alex Kincaid’s book will be the ultimate translator. I’ve recommended this book to all of my friends who found it just as useful! If you’ve ever considered working with an estate lawyer to create a will or a trust, then you’d be off to a great start by picking up Alex Kincaid’s book ‘Plan Now’.

Alex’s famed quote explains the goal of her book very well…

She showcases a wide variety of ways an unsuspecting American is in jeopardy if they do not make an effort to plan in the event of their passing or if they become incapacitated. She has seen it all and seeks to help you prepare yourself, so you don’t get caught off guard.

After diving into the chapters, you’ll realize you too may be at risk of the government deciding who should be in charge of taking care of you if you become incapacitated. You may also be in a situation where the government can decide who gets your estate in the event of your passing.

The shining light is that Alex Kincaid clearly lays out sensible options to protect your future. She breaks down the law into bite-sized chapters and acts as your personal guide to understanding wills, trusts, as well as provides a better understanding of probate. She offers sound advice for protecting yourself and your loved ones from devastating life penalties that may be too difficult to recover from financially.

Most importantly, once you get a better understanding of estate planning, she explains in the book what to look for when choosing a lawyer! A good lawyer who is knowledgeable at estate planning and can design a plan that is custom to you and your needs.

I used to work for Alex Kincaid, and I can personally say I was thoroughly impressed with her attention to detail and passion she had to serve her clients! She represents Oregon and Idaho, so if you’re in either of those states you can get more information on her website: AlexKincaidLaw.com.

Of all the financial advice out there, I continue to come back to Dave Ramsey’s tried and true teachings. He provides a holistic approach to managing your finances. He’ll walk you through how (and why) to live beneath your means, tactics for tackling debt, and will make you look at money management in a whole new way. Not only do I recommend the Money Makeover self-help book, but I highly suggest you check out his YouTube channel.
